Story, Wyoming

Just off of U.S. Highway 87, four miles East of the Bighorn National Forest there lays a city with many wild-west tales to tell. Story, Wyoming is home to several historic sites from the very beginning of the pioneer days.

On the South edge of town you can find the Wagon Box Battle site, Where Captain James Powell and the U.S. Army’s 9th Infantry battled a group of Sioux Warriors in 1867. Head Southeast and you will find the Fort Phil Kearny visitor's center, complete with exhibits, videos, a bookstore, and self-guided tours of the fort grounds. Three miles North of Fort Phil Kearny is the Fetterson Memorial Site, grounds of the second largest victory for the Plains Indians over the U.S. Army. The Fetterman Fight (also known as the Battle of 100-in-the-Hands) is where an estimated 1000 Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne and Arapaho warriors wiped out an entire command of U.S. Soldiers in 1866. Over 30 signs in the site interpret the historic battle from both the Native American and U.S. soldiers’ points of view.

If you are looking for a place to submerge yourself in American History, Story is the place to be!
